Bid On Maria's Little Black Dress!
The 2006 US Open was not only a showcase of world class tennis, it was also home to a number of fashion statements, none more elegant (or more memorable) than the sleek black tennis dress worn by eventual champion Maria Sharapova throughout the fortnight. Now, fans can bid on this dress on the Russian superstar's official Web site.
From her first round match until the prime time championship final, Sharapova donned the custom-made "little black dress", a Nike design, during her evening matches.
Drawing inspiration from legendary designer Givenchy , the Nike Design team infused elements from the original "little black dress" Audrey Hepburn wore in Breakfast at Tiffany's to create the one-of-a-kind piece. With its empire waistline adorn with a chic black belt and flat bow, the dress incorporates patented Dri-Fit technology, allowing for optimal cooling and maximum comfort, all with Maria's personal style - fun, chic and sophisticated. It also includes a clean collar line embellished with tonal crystal décor, princess seaming, slits at the hemline to allow for mobility and an open back to allow for breathability.
"The inspiration for the night dress was Audrey Hepburn," Sharapova said after her first round US Open victory. "I'm inspired by her. I'm in a phase where I'm watching all her movies. I just thought she was amazing. She wasn't just an actress, she was part of UNICEF ; all the things she did for children in her life. It's classy, it's elegant. I love the neck of it; that was kind of my input towards the design. I'm very excited. It's one of my favorites of the dresses I've ever worn."
Money from the auction will go towards causes supported by the Maria Sharapova Foundation, which is committed to helping "At Risk" children by supporting programs and developing partnerships that help children worldwide realize their potential, initiate change and achieve their dreams.
"I grew up wanting to be a tennis player, and never knew if that was going to be a reality," said Sharapova after her third round US Open win. "One of the greatest things about being an athlete and making money is realizing that you can help the world and especially children, who I absolutely love working with."
The dress will be on display at Niketown in New York until Sunday, September 17. The auction will run until Friday, September 22nd. To place your bid, visit Sharapova's auction site by clicking here.

Technical Tennis Book Review
Tactical TennisTechnical Tennis: Racquets, Strings, Balls, Courts, Spin, and Bounce by Rod Cross & Crawford Lindsay (Racquet Tech Publishing)
True or false: Lower string tension produces more power; lighter racquets travel faster and have more power; thinner-gauge strings create more spin;
a long follow-through keeps the ball on the strings longer for more power and control.
They're all false. Surprised? I was too. These and other equipment-related myths are deconstructed in Technical Tennis, by Rod Cross, an associate professor of physics at the University of Sydney, Australia, and Crawford Lindsey, the editor-in-chief of Racquet Sports Industry magazine. In it Cross and Lindsey cover just about everything you could ever want to know about the physics and technology of tennis. Whether it's strings, racquets, balls, or spin, they break down the science of it all using ordinary language and clear writing; you won't have to run to the dictionary every other sentence. What's more, at four chapters and 160 pages long, you can read it in an afternoon.
After reading Technical Tennis I couldn't help but wonder why this book wasn't written decades ago. It should be a staple reference volume on every serious tennis player's bookshelf. And it should be required reading for everyone in the tennis-equipment industry as well as every instructor and coach on the planet.

Sharapova Wins US Open
"I experienced it two years ago and I knew that I wasn't done, I had a lot more in me. This is not preparation that happened a couple weeks before the tournament, this is preparation I've done since I was a little girl, with the help of my amazing family."
Since taking the women's tennis world by storm two summers ago with a scintillating run to the Wimbledon title, she climbed the rankings, won several Sony Ericsson WTA Tour titles and became her own brand. But she was a perennial semifinalist at the majors, a trend that evoked doubt as to whether or not she would ever reach that pinnacle again. Then, on a magical Saturday night in New York, the nay-sayers were finally put to rest; with a resounding, straight set championship win over Justine Henin-Hardenne, Maria Sharapova captured the 2006 US Open.
As she has done at all majors in the last two seasons (with the exception of Roland Garros), Sharapova lived up to her Top 4 seeding relatively easily during the Flushing fortnight, her biggest hurdles prior to the semifinals coming against China's Li Na and France's Tatiana Golovin in the fourth round and quarterfinals, respectively. The No.3 seed still managed to defeat them both in straight sets.
The Russian's Grand Slam renaissance began in the semifinals. Staring down an 0-3 head-to-head against Amelie Mauresmo (the reigning Australian Open and Wimbledon champion, as well as the world's No.1), Sharapova came out firing, taking the opening set at love. After allowing the second set to go her opponent's way, she conjured up her best form again, cruising to a 60 46 60 victory.
Then there was the triumph over Henin-Hardenne, who, like Mauresmo, had been one of her nemeses over the last few years. She had lost their last four meetings, and things seemed headed the same way early on as Henin-Hardenne jumped out, 2-0. But Sharapova played her way back into the set, eventually breaking serve again in the ninth game before serving it out in the 10th. The two women held tightly to their serve in the second set, but again it was Sharapova who came through with a break in the seventh game, holding serve the rest of the way en route to the 64 64 victory over the world's No.2-ranked player.
"Coming into the match, I felt pretty relaxed," Sharapova said. "Although I lost the first two games, I didn't worry about it. I was pretty positive about the whole thing. I was excited to be in the final of a Grand Slam, and thought I would enjoy the opportunity, the moment of it, keep fighting until the end. That's what I did."
"She was brave tonight, more than me; that made a big difference," said Henin-Hardenne, who was seeking another major to add to her previous five. "I tried to keep fighting every point but she was just better tonight. Second place is always the most difficult. It's not a nice feeling but I will have time to think about this."
After one last Henin-Hardenne forehand error on match point, Sharapova fell to the ground in celebration of her second career Grand Slam title.
"When you go down on the ground, you just think of everything you've put into this moment, and even though the moment is a very short time, when you get to be on court with that trophy, it's just so incredible," said Sharapova, who became just the eighth woman in history to defeat the world's Top 2 at the same major. "This was a new opportunity and the final of a Grand Slam. So the last thing I was worrying about was the last four times that I lost to her. I didn't worry about what happened in my semifinal when I beat Amélie, either. I was just in a zone."
Sharapova attributed some of her heightened confidence level to various things, but most notably some off-court work she had done during the summer season. Her movement was exceptional all fortnight long.
"After Wimbledon I took a week off, came back to Los Angeles and worked with a fitness coach for seven days. I probably spent two or three hours a day doing fitness, an hour or so hitting the ball. The week after that, I started playing more tennis. I played twice a day. I played some matches. Did a bit of fitness, just alone, did some things that I took from the week before.
"I went to San Diego and I moved better than I've moved in my career."
Henin-Hardenne, whose movement is among the best in the game, can take away several positives from the past fortnight, including the fact that she was just the seventh player in the Open Era to reach the finals at all four majors in a season.
"I had a good couple of weeks. Unfortunately it ends in a way I don't like; but it's been great season for me, and it's not over yet. I couldn't have expected these results. I've been pretty consistent for the whole year. The thing is that I'm still healthy, and I hope I can play a few more tournaments, then the Championships.
"I was saying 2006 would be a year of transition. It's the first year since 2003 I've played a whole season. At the end, I'll make conclusions and see what my plans will be for next year."
Sharapova and Henin-Hardenne were not the only singles standouts at the 2006 US Open. Mauresmo enjoyed an impressive run, overcoming a lopsided head-to-head in beating Serena Williams in the round of 16 before losing to Sharapova in the semifinals. Jelena Jankovic continued to turn her season around in a big way by reaching her career-first Grand Slam semifinal, upsetting three Top 10 players before losing a heartbreaker to Henin-Hardenne. There was also a solid run from one of the sport's all-time greats, Lindsay Davenport; the American fended off match points in the third round and Patty Schnyder in the fourth round before falling to Henin-Hardenne for the seventh straight time in the quarterfinals.
But the fortnight belonged to Sharapova, who pulled off one of her biggest wins in front of a prime time crowd. And she sees even prettier things coming her way.
"I'm thrilled that I got to experience another Grand Slam win. There's nothing like winning your first major, but to win your second is the cherry on the cake. There are a lot more cherries that I'm gonna put on that cake so I'm looking forward to having them."

Federer Wins US Open; Makes New Friends
Is Tiger Woods the Roger Federer of golf? Or is Roger Federer the Tiger Woods of tennis?
The two men who dominate their respective sports came face-to-face for the first time Sunday before and after Federer's four-set win over Andy Roddick in the US Open final. The pair met in the referee's office about 75 minutes before the final and hooked up again in the locker room after the match. Federer also met with rock star Gavin Rossdale and Woods also spoke with Roddick.
Federer said of the meeting in his post-match press conference: "It's very nice to get to meet him finally after all the time we've been trying to get to see each other in Shanghai. I remember I was there in Dubai when he was there. He plays so much in the States, that when I'm here, you would think that we would get a chance to see each other. Our schedules, they collide.
More and more often over the last year or so, I've been kind of compared to Tiger, what he's doing on the golf tour, me doing on the tennis tour. So today was kind of the day where finally we got to meet and chat a little longer. I asked him how it was for him. It's funny because many things were similar. He knew exactly how I kind of felt out on the court. That's something that I haven't felt before, a guy who knows how it feels to feel invincible at times and, when you just have the feeling like there's nothing going wrong any more. In the fourth set, for instance, I guess, for him on the final round, he knows exactly how it feels.
That's what was so interesting to talk to him about. Of course that's not all we talked about. We talked about other things, but it was just really great fun to get to meet him. My parents are great golfers, so he was nice enough to talk to them, as well, over the phone. They're not in bed yet, so it was great. He's very nice, and much nicer than I expected. I thought him to be nice, but he's really, really nice."
